Introduction

Med-ic® smart blister pack and eCAP™ smart bottle cap are smart packages - devices that automatically record the date and time of each opening (i.e. each dose removal).

CertiScan is the medication adherence platform for managing these smart packages. The platform includes CertiScan Cloud, where smart package data is stored and analyzed, and the CertiScan Web Portal, where the data is accessed and visualized.

This guide is for providers - healthcare professionals and other patient-facing staff who are responsible for setting up and managing smart packaging.

CertiScan Terminology

  • Project: Clinical activity with defined start and end times. This includes clinical research like studies and trials.
  • Site: Projects must have one or more sites where clinical activities are conducted.
  • Providers: The staff members who oversee a project. Providers can have two roles:
    • Project admins: Can view and manage patients across all sites, add/remove sites, add other providers, and perform other project-level tasks.
    • Site investigators (i.e. coordinators): Can only view and manage patients at their site.
  • Patients: The participants/subjects in the project, whose adherence will be monitored.
  • USB Peripherals: A device that plugs into your computer and lets you interact with smart packages. Depending on your project, the peripheral will be one of:
    • CertiScan Reader: Enables wireless data transfer between smart packages and CertiScan Portal.
    • Barcode Scanner: Used to scan package labels in order to assign packages to patients.
  • Regimens: Describe what must be taken (i.e. the medication) and how it should be taken (i.e. the schedule). In CertiScan specifically, regimens are adherence rules that affect how patient data is displayed in charts and in lists.

Working with Smart Packages

The general workflow:

  1. Set up patients with smart packages, app access code (if applicable), and regimen (if applicable).
  2. Smart packages store the adherence data.
  3. (If applicable) Patients scan their packages to enable remote monitoring.
  4. Scan a returned smart package.
  5. Work with patient data: review adherence summaries and adherence details and provide coaching according to your protocol.
  6. Export data - Project Admin access may be required.
